The eighth grade class of St. Nicholas School, Los Altos, witnesses community service with a reading program outreach.
Literature for Little Ones is a program developed by Mrs. Duffy, eighth grade religion teacher, in which slightly used children’s books are collected for students who attend schools lacking the funds for libraries and classroom enrichment.
St. Nicholas eighth graders distributed over 1,500 books, for ages 3-12, to Del Roble School in San Jose in March in celebration of Dr. Seuss and “Read Across America.”
The day’s events included an assembly, the opportunity for each child to choose a book to take home, distribution of books throughout classrooms, and a quiet
reading time during which the younger students interacted with the eighth graders.
Mrs. Duffy commented, “This is a win-win project in which families can clear their bookshelves and know that children’s books are going to a good cause.”
St. Nicholas School will continue collection and distribution of books indefinitely to various schools. Persons interested in donating to Literature for Little Ones may drop off books at 12816 El Monte Road, Los Altos, 94022.
